Even up to a few years back, if you were looking for potent skincare formulations for targeted needs, you would have to resort to international brands. Finding the perfect brightening serum or eye cream that was readily available in India was a struggle, and we had to deal with everything from humongous customs to dodgy Instagram sellers to get our hands on the perfect formulations.
The Skincare Gods listened to our desperate prayers a few years back and as of 2020, we are blessed with numerous homegrown skincare brands that have brought amazing formulations to us. Today we will be talking about 3 homegrown skincare brands that were among the first few to bring out targeted skincare in India, and each one has a unique set of offerings to cater to different needs. Without much ado, let us look at the 3 brands that changed the face of skincare in India.
1. Suganda Skincare
When it comes to Suganda Skincare, some people love it and some people don’t, but you simply can’t ignore this brand. Suganda was arguably the first brand that made terms such as antioxidant serums and Niacinamide commonplace, and even those who had always loved their homemade, DIY skincare paid attention. For the founder Bindu, the journey of formulating skincare started when she couldn’t find the right products for her son’s dry skin and there was no looking back. After extensively studying skincare formulations, Bindu launched Suganda, that currently boasts of a wide range of moisturisers, cleansers, and serums for different skin types.
Most of the formulations contain essential oils, which is why those with sensitive skin often find the products too harsh, but if your skin is not sensitive to essential oils then some of these products can work wonders for you. My personal favourites from the brand are the Anti-oxidant Serum and the Centella and Green Tea Face Wash.
2. Dr. Sheth’s
When a team of seasoned dermatologists from India bring out a skincare range specially formulated for Indian skin, you can’t really go wrong with it, can you? Dr. Sheth’s was the brainchild of the late Dr. Rekha Sheth and Dr. Aneesh Sheth, who together hold decades of experience in the field of dermatology. The idea was to create a skincare line that was formulated keeping in mind the Indian climate and the common skin characteristic of Indians. The brand has some very intriguing products such as the Basic Brightening Daily Peel, the Haldi and Hyaluronic Acid Sleeping Mask, and the Cica and Ceramide Repair Cream.
The products are rich in anti-oxidants, actives, and nourishing ingredients and truly deliver results. I personally love their Basic Brightening Daily Cleanser and the Daily Peel. You can DM the brand on Instagram to get the right product recommendations for your skin type.
3. Juicy Chemistry
Juicy Chemistry is the brand that spearheaded the Organic Skincare revolution in India by bringing a wide range of products formulated using certified organic ingredients. The brand was founded by Pritesh and Megha Asher in 2014, when they realized the dearth of truly organic and effective skincare products in the country, and the fact that a lot of brands were misusing the term “Natural” to sell their products. Not only does Juicy Chemistry promote organic ingredients, but it is also a strong advocate of sustainable skincare, which includes sustainable packaging for all their products as well. The products from the brand do not contain water, which is why they are free of preservatives too.
From their facial oils to their powder face masks and lip balms, I absolutely adore every product from the brand that I have tried so far, and will urge you to give this brand a shot if you do not mind essential oils. Their team is super responsive and will help you select the perfect products for your skincare concerns.
These were my top 3 picks for the skincare brands in India that changed the face of skincare in the country. Let me know what your favourite Indian skincare brand is in the comments below!
