Color correctors are makeup items that not all of us own or find the need to use on a daily basis. In fact, a lot of us don’t even know how to use them properly. The recent launch of the Nykaa Instablur Color Corrector Sticks has yet again risen our curiosity regarding these not so commonplace makeup items. The brand kindly sent me the entire range of color correctors to try out prior to the launch and I have been playing around with these for a while. Here is what I think of this range, along with my two cents on color correctors in general.
How and why to use color correctors?
Just as the name suggests, color correctors are used to neutralize any patches of discolouration on the face so that the base makeup looks even toned. These discolourations could be due to dark circles, acne scars or any other form of pigmentation. To correct the discoloration, you need to apply a color corrector in the complimentary shade on top. For example, to counter any redness on the face you will need to apply a green colour corrector on top.
After applying the color corrector, you can use your concealer and foundation as you normally do. Keep in mind not to apply too much of the corrector on your skin, otherwise its color will peek through your foundation. A sheer wash of color corrector in the areas of concern is sufficient. The Nykaa Instablur Color Correctors offer excellent pigmentation and blendability, so that you can get the right amount of coverage from the product.
How are Nykaa Instablur Color Corrector Sticks unique?
The Nykaa Instablur Color Corrector Sticks stood out to me because they contain an inner core which is formulated with skincare ingredients. The product comes in a stick format wherein the inner skincare core is surrounded by the color correction pigment on its outer rim. The core contains ingredients such as Camellia and Pomegranate to hydrate and brighten the skin. The product feels very creamy on the skin and blends beautifully with both my fingers as well as a brush. It is very pigmented to begin with, so you need a small amount of product and you can then blend it out to a sheer coverage.
I love how the formula feels so hydrating, skinlike and comfortable. Another great thing about the formula is that it somehow manages to blur out my fine lines and texture to some extent, particularly under my eyes. Hence, this corrector doubles up as a primer for me and makeup sits beautifully on top of it while looking more smooth and even.
Which shade of Color Corrector to choose?
The Nykaa Instablur Color Corrector comes in 5 different shades to tackle 5 kinds of discolorations. Peach and Orange for dark circles, Yellow for dullness, Green for redness, and Lavender for paleness. I feel that in the Indian context the peach, orange and green correctors are the most relevant as a lot of us suffer from dark circles and hyperpigmentation. You can also use the yellow corrector to brighten your skin if you have patches of dullness on your face. The shade Peach is meant to cover dark circles in fair to medium skin tones. It is the perfect shade for me (I am NC35 in MAC), so if you have a deeper skin tone than mine then you should opt for the orange corrector instead. So basically, you will probably need only 1-2 color correctors based on your skin type.
I would also like to mention the color coded lids of the product, which makes it easy to identify the shades in case you own multiple shades from the range.
Are Nykaa Instablur Color Corrector Sticks worth buying?
Priced at INR 499 each, I feel that the Nykaa Instablur Color Corrector Sticks are definitely worth buying if you are in the need of color correctors. Their priming effect makes them quite unique in my opinion and their lightweight texture makes them a delight to use. I prefer them to the color correctors that I have used in the past which were similar to liquid concealers in texture.
