Pre-shampoo hair masks are the trend of the season, and I was intrigued yet skeptical when I first got to know about them. It was only when the weather here got so cold that I didn’t want to roam about with a hair mask slathered on my wet hair that I finally decided to try a pre-shampoo hair mask out. Knowing Vilvah to be a reliable brand, I went with the Vilvah Nourishing Hair Mask, a pre-shampoo treatment with nourishing ingredients such as Moringa Oil and Argan Oil. Here is my review of the product after using it for several weeks.
The Formula
The Vilvah Nourishing Hair Mask has a runny consistency that lies somewhere between a serum and a hair oil and is translucent yellow in colour. It has a strong herbal scent and leaves behind an oily film on the fingers after application. The product is a blend of nourishing oils and ingredients like Mango butter, Shea butter, and Beeswax which give it a thicker consistency than a hair oil. The product spreads easily on the hair and scalp and does not feel too greasy. The great thing about Vilvah is that it states the full ingredient list on the packaging and marks which products are certified organic and which are organic but not certified. Such transparency from a brand is hard to find these days.
How To Use
The Vilvah Nourishing Hair Mask comes in a metallic bottle with a pump dispenser that makes it super convenient to use. The brand recommends using one to two pumps of product on the hair and scalp but since I have waist-length hair, I need three pumps to cover all my hair. You are supposed to leave the mask on the hair for half an hour to one hour before washing it off with a mild shampoo. The brand hasn’t mentioned specifically whether or not you should use a conditioner after washing the hair but I will personally recommend using a conditioner if you have dry or frizzy hair.
My Experience with the Vilvah Nourishing Hair Mask
I found the Vilvah Nourishing Hair Mask to be a light-weight and more hydrating version of a hair oil. It leaves my hair looking healthier and feeling stronger and softer after every use. That being said, it isn’t really a replacement for a post-shampoo hair mask because it doesn’t untangle the hair or make them as smooth as a post-shampoo hair mask does. I would say that if you use this and then use a shampoo and hydrating conditioner then you won’t need a post-shampoo hair mask but a conditioner will be needed to add the silkiness to the hair. Also, the price of INR 690 is a little steep, but if you have mid-waist to short hair then you will need only a couple of pumps each time which shall make the product affordable in the long run.
Overall, I would say that the Vilvah Nourishing Hair Mask does a fine job at nourishing and strengthening the hair and is an excellent light-weight alternative to your standard hair oil. However if you have very dry and frizzy hair then you will need to use a conditioner or hair serum after shampooing your hair to get rid of all the frizz and to smoothen any knots. Those with fairly silky and straight hair can probably get away with just this mask and a shampoo. If pure ingredients are what you are looking for to nourish your hair from within then I would recommend you to go for the Vilvah Nourishing Hair Mask.
