Ever since I have coloured my hair, I have been doing a fair amount of research on hair products meant for coloured hair. Since my new hair colour has cooler undertones of red and purple in it, I decided that I needed to invest in a purple/silver shampoo to keep the brassy and yellow undertones at bay. Read on to find out more about my experience with the Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Color Freeze Silver Micellar Shampoo.
Why does one need a purple/silver shampoo?
If you are someone who has bleached or coloured their hair, a purple shampoo is needed to retain and extend the vibrancy of the hair colour even after multiple washes. Exposure to sunlight and washing the hair with chlorinated water can lead to the stripping of some pigments from coloured hair, which in turn makes them look brassier and warm-toned. A purple shampoo contains temporary purple dye that coats the coloured hair, neutralizing the brassiness with its cool undertones. Therefore, anybody who wants to prevent that ugly brassy orange effect on their hair after a few weeks of colouring needs to invest in a purple shampoo. Check this article to find out more about why a purple shampoo is needed not just by blondes but also by darker haired people.
How to use a purple shampoo?
A purple shampoo can be used just like a regular shampoo, except that you can leave it on your hair for a couple of extra minutes if you want the cooler undertones of your hair to be starker. You can use it once a week on darker coloured hair, and if you have lighter hair with more brasiness you can use it more frequently. Even though this shampoo contains temporary dye particles, it does not stain the hands or scalps if rinsed within a few minutes, so you do not need to wear gloves while using this shampoo.
Will a purple shampoo actually clean my hair and scalp?
Yes, a purple shampoo does cleanse the hair and scalp like a regular shampoo, it has to be used as a replacement for regular shampoo and not as an extra step in the haircare routine.
My experience with the Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Color Freeze Silver Micellar Shampoo.
The Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Color Freeze Silver Micellar Shampoo is called a silver shampoo, but I think it is technically a purple shampoo because it has a deep purple to navy colour. This shampoo has a colour freeze technology with a pH of 4.5 which is supposed to help with preserving the hair colour in a better manner. This shampoo has a very striking but pleasant smell that lingers in the hair and produces a rich lather that cleanses the scalp and hair really deeply. It does contain SLS but it does not cause my hair to bleed. I have currently coloured the tips of my hair with a red dye that is notorious for bleeding, but with the use of this shampoo I have not noticed any bleeding whatsoever. I also love how this shampoo adds volume at the crown by lifting my roots and adds a healthy shine to my hair without stripping them dry.
My final verdict
The Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Color Freeze Silver Micellar Shampoo has managed to preserve the vibrancy and true undertones of my hair colour for over a month now and I love how it adds volume and gloss to my hair. I will recommend it to those with normal to oily coloured hair. The price point of INR 900 for a 250ml bottle does seem a little pricey but it is a shampoo from the brand’s professional range and you will need to use it sparingly, once a week or so. Also, it will cut down the time, cost and effort of retouching your hair colour by extending its life. Overall, it gets full marks from me and I will definitely be repurchasing it again and again.
