NYX Total Control Drop Foundation | Review and Swatches

Another day, another foundation review. I am going on a foundation no-buy after reviewing this one, I promise (at least until there is a fascinating new foundation launch)! Coming to the agenda of the day, today I will be reviewing the NYX Total Control Drop Foundation, a serum foundation that many in the beauty community swear by. I recently purchased it during the Nykaa Hot Pink Sale when it was available at a decent discount and have been testing it out ever since. So without further ado, here are my thoughts on this foundation.

The NYX Total Control Drop Foundation is a serum foundation that comes in a glass bottle with a dropper. One bottle contains 13ml of product, which may seem very less but each watery drop of this foundation is super pigmented, so this bottle will last you as long as a regular sized cream-based liquid foundation. The packaging is simplistic and classy, which I quite like, but of course since it is a very liquidy formula, you have to be careful while replacing the dropper on the bottle to make sure there is no residual product around the lid.

Like I said, the formula is super thin and liquidy, just like water but is potent in the pigmentation department. It blends like a dream on the skin, and leaves a velvety matte finish which looks fairly natural if you use a couple of drops of the product. The coverage of this foundation can be customized based on the amount of product that you use. A couple of drops will give you a sheer coverage, while 4-5 drops will give you almost full coverage. I use 2-3 drops of the foundation for my face and neck area and it gives me a decent medium coverage, where only my bigger blemishes and my dark circles peek through a little if I don’t use a concealer. Because the formula is so thin, you can get away with layering this foundation up without your face looking cakey. However, it dries down to a matte finish, so if you have dry skin then it may cling to your dry patches and exaggerate them a little. For normal to oily skin, this foundation will work really well and provide an even coverage for 6-8 hours.

Coming to the shade range, the NYX Total Control Drop foundation is available in 21 shades in India which cover a wide range of undertones and complexions. The brand has also described each shade really well to help you pick the right shade for you. I went with the shade 08 True Beige which has a warm yellow undertone. This shade is a little light for me to wear on its own, but since I use only 3-4 drops and use a bronzer to add back the shadows to my face, it works pretty fine for me. I think that the shade 10 Buff, would be my exact shade match which I could wear even without a bronzer. However, True Beige really helps brighten up my face while complimenting my yellow undertones. Also, I can mix a couple of drops with any other foundation to adjust the shade as per my liking.

NYX Total Control Drop Foundation vs Sugar Cosmetics Drop The Base Serum Foundation – If I were to compare it to the Sugar Cosmetics Drop The Base Serum Foundation then, first of all, the Sugar one is slightly thicker and has a more oily – slippery consistency while the NYX one feels more watery and is very thin. Also, the shade 32 of the Sugar foundation is slightly deeper and much yellower than the shade 08 of the NYX foundation, which is brighter, less yellow, and slightly more beige. While I love the airbrushed finish that the Sugar foundation provides a little bit more than the finish of the NYX foundation, the NYX one feels lighter on the skin and does not contain any fragrance. As I mentioned in the review of the Sugar foundation, that one contains fragrance and broke me out a bit, while the NYX foundation does not irritate my skin or break it out at all. Both the foundations contain silicones, which is a common con if you don’t like silicones in your makeup. Pricewise, the Sugar foundation retails for INR 899 while the NYX foundation retails for INR 1250. So I will recommend going for the NYX foundation if you have sensitive skin or want a more natural finish with your foundation, but if your skin does not react to fragrance and you prefer a more airbrushed finish then you can go for the Sugar foundation and save a few bucks.

Overall, I feel that the NYX Total Control Drop Foundation is a safe bet for those with sensitive skin that ranges from normal to oily. It’s light-weight texture, customizable coverage, and wide shade range makes it a great choice for the summer months. If you are looking for a foundation that does the job but doesn’t feel like a foundation then this product is the perfect pick for you!
